How Michael Lacey and Jim Larkin was Able to Start Frontera Fund

The co-founders of Village Voice Media and Phoenix New Times Jim Larkin and Michael Lacey, were illegally arrested on October 18, 2007 at their Phoenix homes. Arrests were issued by Joe Arpaio, the Sheriff of Maricopa County, in response to matters related to the two co-founders exposing the Sheriff’s handle on illegal immigrant affairs in their publications. The action which took the cake came when the executives would publish a post on Phoenix New Times, claiming that Maricopa County’s” grand jury subpoenas targeted the paper’s writers, the editors and its readers”. A judge states that the prosecution of this action was “highly inappropriate”. The arrest violated Michael Lacey and Jim Larkin’s First Amendment right. Once there was an outcry on this matter, Michael Lacey and Jim Larkin were released immediately.

To resolve this wrongful arrest case, Maticopa County pays out $3.75 million to both Michael Lacey and Jim Larkin. In response to how Arpaio [the anti-illegal immigrant] and other law enforcement and public officials discriminate against Latinos and Hispanics, the two co-founders would start an organization called, the Lacey and Larkin Frontera Fund. This organization provides grants to migrant-rights organizations operating out of Arizona. This was a big step in the right direction in providing the support needed for those Latinos and Hispanics who struggles with getting the proper respect in America when it comes to their human rights. The two executives would also start a website in support of the First Amendment, called the Front Page Confidential. This site is a total commitment to the Freedom of the Press on First Amendment issues throughout the United States of America
